Oil Lamps vary in their capacity to hold fuel depending on the lantern design. The larger lanterns, such as our Classic 17" kerosene lantern, hold up to six ounces of fuel and the smaller ones hold at least four ounces (Wall-Table). Vermont Lanterns are designed to be very fuel efficient, so if there is ever a question of shortages of fuel, you will be glad you own a Vermont Oil Lantern. One quart of standard lantern fuel (be it kerosene or other fuel) will last you up to two weeks under normal usage.

Vermont Oil kerosene lanterns are energy efficient and safely burn kerosene or specially sold lamp fuels." Kerosene is the most common fuel and is very safe. It is readily available in many gas stations, hardware stores and general stores and is the least expensive. Lamp fuel (also safe) is also widely available but somewhat less available. There are several grades (and colors). The odorless fuels cost quite a bit more but are otherwise similar. They are available in various chain stores depending on your locality. All these fuels are safe because they are slow burning and not volatile like gasoline or other such fuels. Paraffin is odorless but gives less light than the others. Citronella is also commonly available, has a nice odor, and repels bugs.

Our suggestion is to purchase a quanitity of the odorless fuel for shorter term useage and a stock of kerosene for longer term preparedness. Amounts depend on your desired degree of preparedness.
